Non sono mai tornata indietro

On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Department of Italian Studies is happy to invite you to the screening of "Non sono mai tornata indietro" (2022), a film by Silvana Costa. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Director, Silvana Costa, and the main protagonist, Iolanda Pascale.

This documentary tells the story of Iolanda, a Calabrian woman who lived in the director's family for 36 years before fleeing to Canada. Iolanda was a family person but with a subordinate role, a liminal identity, which oscillated between love and hate, between rebellion and acceptance. In a journey back in time and through archaic practices, the director reconstructs, together with her old nanny, her long physical and ideal journey which separated them for more than 30 years. Between yearnings for freedom and inseparable bonds, a "micro-story" comes to life that tells of our country, its multiple cultures and the attempt to overcome them to reclaim one's self-determination.
