MA Without Thesis
- Coursework. Successful completion of 4 full-course equivalents (FCEs) as follows:
- ITA 1000H Methodologies for the Teaching and Study of Italian (0.5 FCE)
- 3.5 graduate FCEs including a mandatory extra-departmental course (0.5 FCE) and up to two other extra-departmental courses (1.0 FCE) chosen in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator.
- A student's program of study must be approved by the department.
MA With Thesis Option
- Coursework. Successful completion of 3 full-course equivalents (FCEs) as follows:
- ITA 1000H Methodologies for the Teaching and Study of Italian (0.5 FCE)
- 2.5 graduate FCEs including a mandatory extra-departmental course (0.5 FCE) and up to two other extra-departmental courses (1.0 FCE) chosen in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator.
- MA thesis, subject to approval by the MA thesis supervisor. The thesis must be defended by the end of the winter term. The winter term will be dedicated to writing the thesis.
- A student's program of study must be approved by the department.

Students will take 0.5 FCE of thesis research in the Fall and a further 0.5 FCE in the Winter term. The Fall term will include two milestones: an abstract of the project to be submitted by the 6th week of the term, and an annotated bibliography to be submitted by the end of the term (both to the supervisor and the Graduate Coordinator). The Winter term will be dedicated to writing the thesis. The thesis must be defended by the end of the Winter term. The evaluation of the thesis will include an oral examination by the thesis supervisor and a second examiner selected by the Graduate Coordinator among the department faculty or from a cognate department in the case of an interdisciplinary or comparative project. The thesis can be accepted as is or with modifications, which need to be made within a month and approved by the supervisor. In case of failure, the student will have three months to revise the thesis which will have to be reviewed and approved by both the supervisor and the second examiner. The thesis could be written in English, French or Italian. An abstract of about 150 words in English or French must form part of the thesis. Appropriated length: approximately 50 pp.
