Science of the Stage, Science on the Stage: Giambattista Della Porta’s Plays and Philosophy
Giambattista Della Porta (1535–1615) was a key figure in Early Modern European drama and philosophy. One of the most prolific playwrights of the Italian Renaissance, he also played a crucial role in scientific discussions on a wide range of topics, from witchcraft ointments to optics. But to what extent were his theatrical works and scientific pursuits intertwined? This lecture explores the presence of scientific discourse in Della Porta’s plays, with a particular focus on alchemy, physiognomy, astrology, and natural magic. By examining these themes, I aim to uncover the connections between natural philosophy and drama in the work of this Renaissance author.
Matteo Leta is an MSCA-Cofund Eutopia SIF Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Warwick. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto and has held various research and teaching positions in Italy, Germany, Ireland, and France. His research explores the relationship between science and theatre, as well as the theatrical representation of “otherness,” with a particular focus on Renaissance drama. His book, Le Trompeur Trompé: Représentations littéraires des charlatans à la Renaissance, was recently awarded the Prix de soutien à la création littéraire 2024 by the Fondation Simon et Cino Del Duca, following a recommendation from the Académie Française.
