Goggio Lecture: Gabrielle Houle – “The Servant of Two Masters at the Piccolo Teatro of Milan, or Giorgio Strehler as Goldoni redivivus”

January 30 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

In 1947, theatre director Giorgio Strehler staged a production of Carlo Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters at the nascent Piccolo Teatro of Milan. This production would become famous around the world and set new standards for imagining Commedia dell’Arte in the 20th century. Strehler not only explored the national repertoire in performance with this staging, he also used it to reform some of the practices that prevailed on Italian stages after World War II. This talk will examine the dramaturgical choices Strehler made for his first staging of the Servant of Two Masters and draw parallel between his endeavour and Goldoni’s attempts at reforming Italian theatre two centuries earlier.
