Prof. Guillaume Bernardi (York University) “Reviving a Baroque Opera from the Manuscript to the Stage: The Curious Case of Alessandro Stradella’s La Doriclea.”
October 12 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Whereas for many centuries the fame of baroque composer Alessandro Stradella (1639-1682) rested mainly on his flamboyant personality and adventurous life, in recent years his inspired works have been revived with great critical acclaim. His opera La Doriclea, a “commedia di cappa e spada”, written for Genoa’s aristocratic families in 1681, was lost for many centuries. Recently its manuscript was rediscovered, allowing for productions and a very recent recording. In this lecture, I will examine La Doriclea in the context of Italian Baroque opera and situate its remarkable libretto in the literature of the period. I will then examine the complex steps that are necessary to produce and record today an opera belonging to such a different cultural milieu.
