Acting (in) Calabrian: Tony Nardi’s 1990 production of A Modo Suo (A Fable)
Tony Nardi’s play A Modo Suo (A Fable) in 1990 broke historical ground in English Canadian theatre in a number of ways, but chiefly because it was performed in Calabrian by a group of professional Equity actors in a downtown Toronto English-language mainstream theatre. In this paper I bring forward an insider’s perspective on the multifaceted challenges faced by the company in bringing A Modo Suo (A Fable) to the stage. My premise is that A Modo Suo (A Fable) is a case study in the complex issues surrounding what it is to be an Italian Canadian or any other culturally hyphenated artist in a bilingual multicultural country.
