Where are the Italian Canadian Playwrights?
Italian Canadian theatre has a rich and varied history, from Toronto’s Golden Age in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s to productions of innovative plays by writers of Italian heritage working contemporaneously in professional, community and educational theatre contexts across the country. Yet this history remains largely ignored by Canadian theatre scholars or it is viewed through the lens of minority literature or “ethnic” theatre practice. In this paper I explore the significant body of Italian Canadian dramatic literature in existence, challenging prevailing notions of what constitutes Canadian theatre and performance.
